The work trips included January to Boston, February it was Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Las Vegas for an IBM event in March, end of April it was Hannover and I just got back from Santa Clara, California from an IoT event. Nestled in there between Vegas and Hannover at the start of April was the family trip to Japan. This was a 50th birthday gift from my wife that I received the previous August. It seemed to take an age coming, partly with all the other travel before it, but was well worth the wait.<br \/>\nWe headed out from Heathrow airport stopping by Heston&#8217;s airline food place in the terminal <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/39367905290\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Heston at Heathrow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/802\/39367905290_cdff4c94db.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Heston at Heathrow\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was Tokyo (ignoring the part about the very long flight as I just zone out and get on with that now)<br \/>\nWe arrived to be met by the local representative, as this was all book through the wonderful Trailfinders company. He presented us with all the train tickets and schedule reminders and navigated us to the hotel (we chose a to pay for a taxi though we had train tickets as &#8230; you know a long flight!). Driving through the Tokyo roads the place looked and felt just right, it was not even too crowded or busy. The taxi driver was wearing white gloves (no picture of that but it just came to mind)<br \/>\nWe were staying in Park Hotel at the Shiodome Media Tower which was ideally situated for the train lines.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/39367905450\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Park Hotel\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/785\/39367905450_96bf3c114b.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Park Hotel\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The hotel took up the top floors of what a media office block but its internal atrium style made it feel miles away from anything. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41134137292\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Park Hotel\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/795\/41134137292_95f3c3fb30.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Park Hotel\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We still had some time to explore after arriving before crashing out, so we went for a walk.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/40465616124\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Tokyo Sunset\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/791\/40465616124_7f6e88f7f5.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Tokyo Sunset\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Being in the media part of the city there was some interesting art. Which kind of hints at the wonderful Japanese mix of efficiency and buttoned down approach to life combined with a great expression of art and culture and the joy of life. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/27304680868\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Odd Sculptures\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/786\/27304680868_7fb66c643f.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Odd Sculptures\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/p>\n<p>Right near all the polished skyscrapers we found this district full of small arcades and shops. The loud noise of the pachinko places, where thousands of small ball bearing ping around pins was noticeable. We did not go in as they don&#8217;t allow under 18&#8217;s in to these gambling areas, despite the bright lights and manga window dressing. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41134139632\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Near the hotel\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/805\/41134139632_140d0eca87.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Near the hotel\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So here we were in Tokyo, ready for the adventure<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41134139872\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Family in Japan\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/869\/41134139872_10737191d8.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Family in Japan\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>As expected, vending machines were everywhere, this was just round from the shops. Hot and cold cans of drink of all sorts.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/27304680588\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Vending machines\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/878\/27304680588_dd58b5b015.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Vending machines\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Across from the hotel they were shooting a kids TV show, I was going to try and join in for old time&#8217;s sake \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41178611501\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Kids TV\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/872\/41178611501_460cd38ebe.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Japan trip\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It made for an odd skyline picture but again, so very Japanese in its contrast and blending at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41178612161\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Character Hiding\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/818\/41178612161_5498b48458.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Character Hiding\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>With the potential confusion of a language that we have almost no possibility to read or speak with any degree of competence we had a guide show us around Tokyo on the first day. This was also great to be able to talk about the differences and similarities in our cultures. I learned an awful lot from our guide and we also shared our perspectives. One of the key things that we learned was about the religious side of life. Japan has both Shinto and Buddhist culture, plus a smattering of other things like christian churches. However the key is that there seems to be no specific religious tension, it is not a choice of believing or not in one or the other, the Japanese people have absorbed both, or all. Our guide said asking someone what religion they were in Japan would be a confusing question, as its melded and just all part of life. Shinto shrines are typically marked by the typical square arch, with rope and white flags and buddhism has ornate temples, they co-exist.<br \/>\nWe first went to a temple though, obviously a tourist trap with lots of shops around it, but at the same time oddly tranquil despite the crowds. We were shown how to cleanse our hands with water and make an offering and a prayer. It did not, as an atheist feel hypocritical nor like being a tourist, just blending in. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/39393913580\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Tokyo tour\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/881\/39393913580_4c666511f2.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Tokyo tour\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/27344794538\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Tokyo Temple\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/886\/27344794538_d7bcae5b42.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Tokyo Temple\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We were lucky enough to see some of the famous cherry blossom<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/27344796318\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Cherry Blossom\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/893\/27344796318_bb276b1516.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Cherry Blossom\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We also got to see a very rare art exhibition of panel paintings, not photos of those, but they were stunning. All telling various Japanese samurai stories and fables. The art style being 2d and not using perspective, yet at the same time feeling flowing and in motion. <\/p>\n<p>Escaping hustle and bustle we entered the Japanese garden next to temple. The aim of these is to recreate elements of nature, ponds are lakes and sea, rocks represent mountain ranges.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/40322072775\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Garden\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/800\/40322072775_afcb6e0059.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Garden\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Like our pond at home, lots of Koi<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/27344767928\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Koi\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/798\/27344767928_1165605a57.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"181\" alt=\"Koi\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The garden is very old, again part of the absorbing of the old and new that the culture seems suited to.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41219135181\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Tokyo tour\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/870\/41219135181_7e95d4dca1.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Tokyo tour\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Right next door, in the same grounds as the temple this was our first view of a Shinto shrine, we did not visit this particular one as we had more of that to come.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41218970331\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Shinto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/810\/41218970331_724b8fdce6.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Shinto\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We took a boat trip back to our next destination, but our guide pointed out these buildings and highlighted the symbolism that is often used. This is not the normal weak green tea, but frothy almost broth. Still nestled in and preserved and absorbed. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41204341131\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Capsule architecture\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/868\/41204341131_c5f0d832f6.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Capsule architecture\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Then it was up to a very high floor to have a meal. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/26345921477\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"High up\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/883\/26345921477_a864715678.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"High up\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They did have an english menu but our guide talked us through this <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41174372472\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Menu\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/869\/41174372472_7e57132c1f.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Menu\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It was also really nice to get this, and odd as I had forgotten it was now april 2018 and my birthday was in August 17 \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/40504569614\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Birthday\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/808\/40504569614_4bb121a69d.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Birthday\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>An yes there were robots, Softbank&#8217;s Pepper made an appearance on this trip a few times<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/40504473654\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Pepper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/873\/40504473654_050d6f40c4.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Pepper\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In Tokyo, whilst navigation may have been a worry, once you get there its pretty easy, every is labelled and numbers and signs tend to have English too. <\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/27344704328\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Sign\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/789\/27344704328_1b9ba14dd0.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Sign\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>We went past or through a shopping district and ended up in a toy shop, thousands of collectibles. Including dancing storm troopers<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/epredator\/41218965051\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"Star Wars\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/868\/41218965051_f3e6567e42.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Star Wars\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I nearly bought this wonderful predator Mr Potato Head, but showed some restraint. In Second Life my full name is epredator potato, just to add to the serendiptiy!
